This type of activity is quite common with students on a gap year but most people assume that to volunteer in Africa, you have to work in the local communities with starving people. Although this is a very worthwhile cause, it is worth knowing that there are other areas in Africa where volunteers are required. You will not be working 24/7 so you will have the opportunity for some once in a lifetime experiences while you are there. You can go white-water rafting or think about taking a bungee jump off the Victoria Falls if you are a bit of an adrenalin junkie. If this sounds like too much adventure for you then you could relax on a horseback or elephant ride to take in some absolutely fantastic scenery.

It is not just lions that you can work with, you can also spend time helping in elephant sanctuaries or work with buffalo, rhinos and leopards.
